Hey Duggee – First Day At Squirrel Club adapted by Rebecca Gerlings
The Blurb On The Back:
Meet Duggee. He runs the Squirrel Club!
Duggee is telling the Squirrels all about their first days at Squirrel Club. Roly was very quiet, Happy was scared of water and Tag wasn’t so good at listening. But Duggee had an idea!
Join Duggee and the Squirrels in this adorable tale and collect your First Day Badge!
It’s another fun day in the Clubhouse as the Squirrels enjoy playing in the warm sun. Duggee already has his First Day Badge and wants the Squirrels to earn their own, so he starts to tell them the story of each of their first days at Squirrel Club and how they reacted to it, starting with little Norrie …
This entertaining picture book has been adapted by Rebecca Gerlings from 5 episodes of the kids’ cartoon HEY DUGGEE! (originally written by James Walsh) sets out how the 5 very different Squirrels handled their first days and how Duggee and the other Squirrels tried to make it easier for them. It’s all very charming and although I’m not familiar with the TV cartoon, I can see why it’s so popular with pre-schoolers.
This is essentially a compilation summary of 5 episodes of HEY DUGGEE! being HAPPY’S FIRST DAY BADGE, TAG’S FIRST DAY BADGE, BETTY’S FIRST DAY BADGE, ROLY’S FIRST DAY BADGE and NORRIE’S FIRST DAY BADGE, each written by James Walsh. I had heard of the TV cartoon before but not seen an episode, but if your reader does watch the show then no doubt these stories will be very familiar.
The book is pretty straightforward. Duggee takes the Squirrels through each of their respective first days, which helps to demonstrate how different they are in terms of personality, e.g. Norrie is fairly independent but missed having friends to play with, Roly was very nervous and didn’t want his dad to leave him there, Happy was very frightened of water, Tag was very brave but also terrible at listening and Betty liked to hang out on her own and do things her own way. For each Squirrel, Duggee comes up with a plan to help them and in turn, all of the Squirrels learn to be friends and bond with each other.
The illustrations are bright and colourful with each Squirrel being a stylised small animal. There’s humour in the text (I particularly enjoyed Norrie’s 72 siblings) and the messages of kindness and individuality come across well.
All in all, I think that fans of the TV show will find a lot to love here and those who, like me, are new to the show, will enjoy this introduction.
The Verdict:
