Rochelle Humes’s picture book is a cute affair aimed at encouraging younger readers to try different foods and which has some solid advice for parents and caregivers on how to handle mealtimes with young readers. Rachel Suzanne’s illustrations are sweet without being cloying and I especially liked the hugs. All in all it’s sweetly done and I would check out more of Blake’s adventures with his little friends.
Blake is a lovely character who enjoys hanging out with his animal friends (I particularly related to the grumpy lion) and is very keen to help the little dragon. I liked the way Blake hugs his friends to make them feel better and the way he goes about trying to find a food that the little dragon likes is going to be very relatable to any parents or caregivers who are reading along with young readers.
There’s some nicely done humour that young readers will enjoy (e.g. when the little dragon accidentally sets fires to Blake’s father’s coat) and Rachel Suzanne’s illustrations are delightful as she gives each animal a character and the pictures really accentuate the text.
Hume has put an introduction to the book to explain why she wrote it, together with some advice at the back for parents and caregivers on how to handle mealtimes and getting young readers to try new foods.
All in all, I thought it was neatly done, very cute and something that young readers will enjoy. I would definitely read more of Blake’s adventures with his little animal friends.
