The Blurb On The Back:
There’s a drummer in my head.
They are tiny, but they’re there.
And they tap-a-tap-tap.
And pa-rum-pa-pum-pum.
All day without a care.
What does ADHD feel like? For this little girl, it’s a drummer in her head, tapping out a rhythm only she can hear: noisy, distracting … and full of joy!
A playful exploration of ADHD, perfect for ALL readers, neurodivergent or not.
The narrator talks about the little drummer who lives in their head and the way their drumming affects her everyday life but how while it can cause issues, it’s still something that she wouldn’t do without …
Sian Radford picture book about living with ADHD is a sensitive look at what it’s like to be neurodivergent and explaining the behaviour of young readers with ADHD to others so that they can understand it. Gwen Millward’s use of colour and depiction of the narrator’s inner drummer provides a very easy way of understanding and following the text.
I picked this up because I’m always interested in books for young readers that explain difficult ideas and this is a perfect example of it. The way Radford’s text and Millward’s works together really gives young readers an understanding of what it’s like to have ADHD and also to explain to those who don’t have it, why people with ADHD sometimes behave in unusual ways.
The Verdict:
