The Blurb On The Back:
Meet Skulduggery Pleasant: sorcerer, detective, warrior.
Oh yes, and dead.
Ryan is an ordinary boy living in an ordinary world.
Or so he thought.
Pursued by a gang of insane sorcerers who want to destroy the planet, Ryan’s only chance for survival rests with skeleton-detective Skulduggery Pleasant and his teenage partner Valkyrie Cain. They have one day to save Ryan. One day to save the world. The clock is ticking …
Ryan is a normal teenage boy. Well, in the sense that he’s overweight, unpopular and nerdy. When a visit to his local library ends with a gang of nihilistic sorcerers believing him to be the key to working a doomsday machine that could destroy the world, Ryan’s only hope lies in Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain. But as the three of them work to find the machine and save the world, Ryan’s going to make a number of discoveries that will completely rock his world.
SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT – THE END OF THE WORLD is a one-off short story written by Derek Landy for World Book Day in 2012. If you’re a fan of the series then you know what to expect – an action packed fantasy mystery with some cracking lines – but if you’re new to Skulduggery Pleasant, then you don’t need to have read the other books to follow this.
Because it’s a short story there’s only one plot strand (rather than the multiple plot strands in the wider series) and it’s a stand-alone, so don’t check this out expecting to find out more about the Darquesse. That said, I thought it was a really satisfying read with a bittersweet ending that left me feeling a little sad. I loved the nihilist sorcerers and there are some kick-ass action scenes that move at an incredible pace.
The real joy of this book though is that Landy includes some of the scenes he originally wrote for SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT, which was incredibly different to what ended up in the final book. If you’re a fan of the series then this is a must-read as you see how Valkyrie and her relationship with her family developed.
All in all, this is a cracking little book and it’s well worth a pound of your money whether you’re an existing fan or a Skulduggery novice.
The Verdict:
SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT – THE END OF THE WORLD is a one-off short story written by Derek Landy for World Book Day in 2012. There’s a fascinating look at some of the early drafts of the first SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT novel, which should keep fans hooked, but the story itself works as a good taster for those completely new to his world.
