The Blurb On The Back:

The SECOND hilarious book from the desk of DOUGAL TRUMP …

Something truly terrible has happened.

Something so awful that it is hard to put into words. But I will try.

Sybil has vanished!

(Not Sibble, my sister. If that happened I wouldn’t be upset AT ALL.)

It’s my beautiful eight-legged Goliath bird-eating spider Sybil who has disappeared.

But if ANYONE can overcome this disaster, it is I, Dougal Trump: superhero, local celebrity and brilliant goalkeeper.

It’s a few weeks after I’M DOUGAL TRUMP … AND IT’S NOT MY FAULT. As a reward for his help in breaking his evil neighbour Lysander Witzel’s animal stealing ring, the London Zoological Association’s letting him look after a beautiful, hairy bird-eating spider called Sybil. Unfortunately, Dougal’s family don’t love Sybil as much as Dougal does and then the unthinkable happens – Sybil disappears!

When a commentator on Dougal’s blog called IhateDougie claims to have Sybil, Dougal finds himself having to perform strange tasks to get her back. The more he tries to keep his predicament a secret, the more trouble he seems to find himself in and it isn’t long until he finds himself ubergrounded!

Jackie Marchant’s sequel to I’M DOUGAL TRUMP is a fun-filled adventure for readers aged 8+ featuring the return of some welcome (and less welcome) characters, some dubious recipes and freaky animals. Boys should particularly enjoy Dougal’s adventures and relate to his love of football but there’s plenty here to keep girls giggling as well.

I loved the fact that Dougal’s now got a blog that his friends and sister can comment on. I particularly enjoyed his recipes (although they definitely should not be tried at home) and his friends’ reactions to them – especially BigBadBurt (aka Burt) and BoingBrain (aka Claude), who remain two of my favourite characters. I did wish there’d been a bit more Sibble but her sibling rivalry with Dougal is believable and sometimes hilarious – as is Dougal’s exchanges with his long-suffering mum.

The central mystery isn’t that difficult to figure out but it’s fun watching Dougal and his friends work their way towards the truth. I did wish that the conclusion had been a bit bigger in scope, although it was still a satisfying end to the story. Mention should also be made of the illustrations by Mike Lowery, which are absolutely brilliant and really add to the humour of the book.

All in all, it’s a thoroughly entertaining read and a solid sequel. I’m looking forward to reading the final book in this trilogy.

The Verdict:

Jackie Marchant’s sequel to I’M DOUGAL TRUMP is a fun-filled adventure for readers aged 8+ featuring the return of some welcome (and less welcome) characters, some dubious recipes and freaky animals. Boys should particularly enjoy Dougal’s adventures and relate to his love of football but there’s plenty here to keep girls giggling as well. Thanks to Macmillan for the free copy of this book.
