The Blurb On The Back:

Penguin first published woman-about-town India Knight in 2000, introducing with My Life on a Plate a voice as fresh as a skinny latte. In On Shopping Knight celebtrates the joys of retail therapy and shares with us the many and varied pleasures to be found online and on the high street, as well as her conviction that if you don't enjoy shopping, you're simply not doing it properly.

This book was given away for free as part of a Starbucks/Penguin Books/The Times promotion to tie in with the 70th anniversary of Penguin Books. At a little over 50 pages long, I suspect that this promotion is intended to give a taster of a longer work, rather than representing the whole of the promotional book.

I'm a big fan of India Knight's column in The Sunday Times as she's someone who comes across as pragmatic, down-to-earth and whilst I don't agree with all her opinions, I don't think she comes across as opinionated. I am not however much of a shopper (or even a girly-girl into fashion and make-up) so this book, which is basically a long essay detailing her own love affair with fashion and coupled with some store and web recommendations didn't really do it for me. However, I do like Knight's voice, which is fresh and personal and I love the dry asides.

The Verdict:

I suspect that you'd get more out of this if you were already a shopaholic, particularly with the store/web recommendations that Knight makes. However, for someone who doesn't live to shop, it didn't really do it for me.
