The Blurb On The Back:

Sofia thinks her little brother is MESSY! And LOUD! And always DEMANDING Mummy and Daddy’s attention!

So when she finds out she’s going to be a big sister again, she shouts ‘NO MORE BABIES!’

Will Sofia ever feel happy about having another new baby in the house?

Sofia’s little brother ruins everything. He destroys her block towers and drools on her toys and is constantly pooing and parping and always takes their mum and dad’s attention. So when Sofia’s mum tells her that she’s going to be a big sister to another baby, Sofia is horrified. NO MORE BABIES! She declares. And so her mum and dad have to persuade her that life with Arlo isn’t all bad …

This delightful picture book by Madeleine Cook with absolutely spot on illustrations by Erika Meza is a must-read for any little ones who are having trouble adjusting to having a younger sibling. It’s also that rare picture book that can give parents and carers ideas for how to help little ones adjust to having a smaller sibling so they don’t feel neglected. I thought it was simply smashing and well worth your time.

Part of the reason I related to this book was because I am an older sibling so could relate to Sofia’s frustration and vulnerability in this book - especially as Meza’s illustrations do such a stellar job of bringing those emotions to life. I also loved the illustrations of poor Arlo, who is just doing normal toddler stuff and doesn’t understand the havoc he’s wrecking and I’ll be honest and say I did laugh at the little scenes where he demonstrates his - ahem - stinkiness.

One reason parents might want to check this out is that I thought the way Sofia’s parents seek to reassure her by spending time with her was sensible and showed how she was reassured both parents still loved her.

All in all, I thought this was an absolutely smashing picture book and I think it’s definitely worth your time if you have a little one, particularly if they’re no longer going to be an only child.

The Verdict:
