The Blurb On The Back:
Discover more about you with the Mr Men and Little Miss
A new series to encourage children to understand more about their own emotions and how to manage them with the help of the Mr Men and Little Miss.
Mr Grumpy and Little Miss Stubborn hate sharing.
Mr Cool and Little Miss Sunshine (who do like sharing) hold a picnic and host games in the local park and invite Mr Grumpy and Little Miss Stubborn to join them. But while Mr Grumpy and Little Miss Stubborn make an appearance, neither of them makes any real effort to join in - Mr Grumpy refuses to share the food he brought while Little Miss Stubborn refuses to accept any of the food offered to her.
Can Mr Cool and Little Miss Sunshine find a way to show Mr Grumpy and Little Miss Stubborn that sharing can be fun?
Roger Hargreaves and Elizabeth Kilbey’s picture book (part of the DISCOVER MORE ABOUT YOU SERIES) is a clever guide for young readers about sharing that also shows how sharing is not just about giving but also accepting and how there are some situations where people don’t have to share. I liked how the book combines silliness with a serious message and explains its theme in an easy to understand way.
This is the 6th book that I’ve read in this series and I think that it’s a really good way of engaging with young readers about socialisation skills and dealing with emotions in a way that’s not too preachy and, on the whole, stays true to the silly humour of the LITTLE MISS and MR MEN books.
This book focuses on Mr Grumpy (who is shown as being a very selfish individual) and Little Miss Stubborn (who refuses to accept help no matter how much it inconveniences her). I liked the fact that Little Miss Sunshine and Mr Cool do not have immediate success when they try to persuade them of the benefits of sharing and how instead it comes through playing games where they see the benefits of teamwork. Also good is how the book explains what sharing is and how it can include accepting an offer from someone wanting to share something with you. In particular, the way it shows how Little Miss Tiny needs her teddy to help keep her calm, so people know that it would not be appropriate to ask her to share it, is very well done and gets across the point that you don’t have to share everything.
All in all, I thought this was a really fun little book that deals with an important subject and on that basis is well worth a look.
The Verdict:
