The Blurb On The Back:

Captain Looroll is SUPER STRONG, ENDLESSLY LONG and very, very bored.
(You would be too, if you spent all day wiping bums!)

But adventure is just around the U-bend for Captain Looroll and her friends. There’s a dreadful stink coming from the toilet upstairs …

Is it just another Number Two or is it the world’s NUMBER ONE SUPER-VILLAIN with a foul-smelling plan to take over the world?!

Captain Looroll was made from a magical talking tree called the Everlasting Oak. Captain Looroll is very strong and very long. She lives in the toilet under the stairs with her friends Ray the Spray, Victoria Sponge and Barbara Brush but the problem is that she is very bored because there is nothing to do all day other than wipe bottoms, which isn’t a whole lot of fun.

But then Captain Looroll gets an emergency call from the upstairs toilet. The toilet is blocked and Barbara Brush’s cousin Barry cannot get the blockage to flush away. That’s because the blockage is really ToiletTroll - a disgusting, soggy toilet roll who is intent on making the world a dirty and smelly place. Can Captain Looroll and her chums stop ToiletTroll before he makes a mess of literally everything?

Matt Carr’s self-illustrated picture book offers poo puns galore in a silly tale that emphasises the power of team work. I wasn’t a huge fan of the rhymes peppering the narration (it didn’t really brought much to the story and became laboured at times) and the gross out elements were a bit too much for me. However young readers tend to find anything poo related hilarious and I’ve no doubt that they will enjoy Captain Looroll’s adventures.

If you have a young reader who finds anything poo and wee related hilarious (and honestly, I think almost every young reader goes through this phase), then they will absolutely love this book. There are plenty of poo jokes and poo puns and the illustrations make clear that ToiletTroll is bringing all kinds of filth into the house as they go about their rampage. To be honest, it was too much for me and I felt a bit grossed out towards the end, but then I’m not in the target audience and I think my view was coloured by the fact that I’m the one who has to clean my own bathrooms.

Captain Looroll is an effective super hero and I liked how she doesn’t do things alone but works with her friends. I was a little torn about that fact it’s that the female characters all seem to have the dirtiest jobs while Ray the Spray just gets to spray things, but that is definitely me reading too much into a picture book. I also wasn’t keen on the rhymes that crop up in the narration - they’re not especially consistent and I didn’t think they really brought much to the story.

All in all, I can’t say that this picture book was entirely my cup of tea but it’s not bad and younger readers will probably find it a lot of fun.

The Verdict:

Matt Carr’s self-illustrated picture book offers poo puns galore in a silly tale that emphasises the power of team work. I wasn’t a huge fan of the rhymes peppering the narration (it didn’t really brought much to the story and became laboured at times) and the gross out elements were a bit too much for me.
