The Blurb On The Back:
Join Sparkle the unicorn and all your favourite characters from the Land of Nod in this TEN MINUTES TO BED LITTLE LIBRARY!
Meet all your favourite bedtimes friends in this Little Library. Perfect for younger readers, each chunky book will keep little hands occupied at home or on the move. And once you’ve enjoyed the stories, the four books come together to create a TEN MINUTES TO BED jigsaw!
Packed with colourful illustrations and fun rhyming interactions to the characters, this Little Library might just be too much fun for bedtime!
Flicker the Little Dragon, Twinkle the Little Unicorn, Rumble the Little Dinosaur and Splash the Little Mermaid all have their own little story here about the things they like to get up to before going to bed.
Rhiannon Fielding and Chris Chatterton’s Little Library of 4 board books for very young readers is a cute affair with each book being the perfect size for little hands. I wasn’t impressed with the jigsaw puzzle element (which I think will confuse very young readers) and I preferred the illustrations to the rhymes (which try too hard for me) but young readers will enjoy them and parents will be grateful for the message of going to sleep.
From a design point of view, these books are perfect for toddlers because they’re small but sturdy and designed to fit into little hands. However the books are also described as coming together to form a jigsaw and in that respect I don’t think they work as well because the pattern on the back covers isn’t clearly defined enough for toddlers to be able to work out which book goes where and I think it could confuse them, which is a shame.
Each book features a different character who explains in rhyming couplets why they don’t like going to bed and what they prefer to do instead with each book ending with them admitting that they do like to go to bed actually. Each of the characters here have also featured in other books in the 10 MINUTES TO BED SERIES so this Little Library is a good entry point for getting toddlers interested in more adventures as they get older a bit more comfortable with books, pictures and words. My only concern is that I can see little boys perhaps being a bit reluctant to read the LITTLE MERMAID book because she’s a girl and I do wonder if it might have been better to have had the Little Monster as the fourth book instead because then all four books would have been gender neutral.
For me, Chatterton’s illustrations work better than Fielding’s rhymes, which just try too hard for me. However toddlers will enjoy them and it does get them used to thinking about how words can sound similar, although I can see parents perhaps getting tired of having to read them after a while.
The Verdict:
