Take on the story quest alongside Ash and Pikachu in this interactive adventure!

Ash and Pikachu are on the hunt for a mysterious Pokémon. Lillie is searching for her lost dad. What will they find in this twisty tale? Complete the picture puzzles, word games and trivia challenges to figure out where the story will take you next.

You’ll need your Pokémon Master skills to finish the story and discover who will be the Hometown Hero!

Ash, Goh, Chloe and their Pokémon Pikachu, Grookey and Eevee are off to the icy Crown Tundra in the Galar region to find an unusual Pokémon that has been spotted there and reported to Professor Cerise. There they bump into Ash’s friend from the All region Lillie who is in the Crown Tundra together with her mother Lusamine and brother Gladion to try and find her missing father Mohn and together they find something incredible …

Afterwards, Ash and Pikachu return to All to engage in a Battle Royal with three other Trainers and Pokémon to determine who will fight in the Masters Eight Tournament. Can they pull off a victory for the ages?

This tie-in book for readers aged 7+ incorporates Pokémon themed puzzles with two interlinked stories. Some of the puzzles assume that you know a lot about Pokémon already not least because you don’t get any explanation for the world, characters or different Pokémon here. The stories themselves are okay, although there’s a lot of repetition in the dialogue and not enough action for me. If you have a young Pokémon fan then they will love it.

I was way past the age to be part of the target audience when Pokémon started as a craze in the UK back in 1999 so although I can recognise who Ash and Pikachu are (and also, weirdly, Psyduck) I literally know nothing about how the world works or the background to it. As a result, I probably didn’t get as much out of this book as a young reader who is a fan of the world is. That became very apparent when it came to tackling the puzzles that you need to solve to get from chapter to chapter as while I could do some of them, I didn’t know enough about Pokémon to solve them all (which was fine as the answers are at the back), which did make me feel remarkably dim. However if you have a young Pokémon fan in your life then they will absolutely love it because it’s all part of the fun.

The stories themselves are okay but a bit uninspiring and not especially well written. The characters all seem to say hello to each other a lot of the time and talk about how cute the Pokémon are. At the same time there is some genuine emotion in the first story, which I found quite moving. The second story is essentially a long Pokémon battle, which is fine but again got a bit repetitive.

All in all, if you have a young Pokémon fan (i.e. someone who already knows, loves and played Pokémon) then they will probably enjoy this. However this is not a good buy for someone who is new to it because it presumes too much prior knowledge.

The Verdict:
