The Blurb On The Back:
It’s time for dinner!
Discover delicious foods of every shape with The Very Hungry Caterpillar!
It’s time for The Very Hungry Caterpillar to have dinner and because he’s Very Hungry he’s going to eat a lot of food - all of which has fascinating shapes as well as being very tasty.
This board book, made with the Eric Carle estate, is a colourful introduction to shapes and different types of food for very young readers. It’s solidly put together but I must confess that I did not understand why there is a hole in the middle of each page (I later learned it’s for the Caterpillar to crawl through) and one of the shapes (a squiggly line) isn’t what I would immediately think of as a shape.
I still remember reading THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR when I was a youngster - it’s an absolute classic with its distinctive art style and simple story - so I was keen to check out this tie-in board book.
The theme here is that each food that the Very Hungry Caterpillar has for his dinner has a specific shape - squares, triangles, semi circles etc - so your young reader learns about the shape while also learning to identify different types of food. The artwork is vibrant and in Carle’s distinctive style and the text has an interactive vibe to it, asking questions to the reader, which they can think about with any adult caregivers who are helping them.
The board pages are chunky and well put together, so perfect to take on the rigours of toddlers who want to fully explore it. However I didn’t understand was why there’s a hole in the middle of each page. It was only when I was reading some other reviews that I realised it’s so that you can pretend the Very Hungry Caterpillar is eating his way through the food on each page. I think that could have been made clearer within the text because it’s not obvious at all. In addition, while I can understand why there’s a ‘squiggly line’ in there, it’s not an obvious shape to explain and feels a bit forced in the context of the overall book.
That said, if you want to introduce your young reader to shapes and food then this is a perfectly decent book and if your young reader is a Very Hungry Caterpillar fan, then they will get a kick out of reading it.
The Verdict:
