The Blurb On The Back:

Dive into Puplantis!

Get ready to dive into a deep-sea rescue with the AQUA PUPS!

When Mayor Humdinger steals from the magical underwater city of Puplantis, it’s up to the PAW Patrol and their Mer-pup friend Coral to save the day.

In the sea near Adventure Bay lies the magical city of Puplantis. It’s the home of the Magic Shell, which makes big pearls in different colours. When Mayor Humdinger learns about it, he’s determined to get a really big coloured pearl all for himself and heads to Puplantis disguised as a Mer-pup and accompanied by the Kitten Catastrophe Crew.

When he’s spotted by Coral (a Mer-Pup and Skye’s cousin), she knows that she needs the help of PAW Patrol to stop him. Ryder, Chase, Rubble and Skye spring into action jump into the Whale Patroller and head under the sea to help Puplantis put a stop to Mayor Humdinger’s dastardly plan!

This picture book (adapted by Matt Huntley from the episode ‘Aqua Pups Save A Merdinger’ by Jeffrey Duteil) has a lot of action but is very much for hardcore Paw Patrol fans as it assumes you know who the characters are and what the set-up is. There were times when I was confused as to who was who and the action is also a little confusing at times but if your young reader is a fan of the cartoon then it should pose them no problems.

I came to this knowing nothing about Paw Patrol other than that it's a very popular cartoon with children and that dogs are the heroes who help people. To be honest, I came away from the book not knowing a huge amount more than that. I did learn who 3 of the dog characters are but as a book, this does assume that you are wholly familiar with the characters and the world they live in as there isn’t even a little character sheet at the beginning to explain who is who (as is the case with some other books of this type).

There were times when I didn’t quite understand what was going on (mainly because I didn’t really understand why the Paw Patrol have their specially adapted vehicles) and it took me a while to figure out that Ryder is the human in the group. However the basic plot was easy to follow - Mayor Humdinger is the bad guy and wants to steal a big pearl so the Paw Patrol have to stop him. The illustrations are fine - clear and easy to follow although they do look to be computer generated.

Ultimately, if your young reader is already a big Paw Patrol fan, then they will get a lot out of this book but if they are new to it, you may want to warm them up with some episodes or other books first.

The Verdict:

This picture book (adapted by Matt Huntley from the episode ‘Aqua Pups Save A Merdinger’ by Jeffrey Duteil) has a lot of action but is very much for hardcore Paw Patrol fans as it assumes you know who the characters are and what the set-up is. There were times when I was confused as to who was who and the action is also a little confusing at times but if your young reader is a fan of the cartoon then it should pose them no problems.
