The Blurb On The Back:
Join Danny as he attempts to smash a load of revolting records including:
Loudest trump!
Cheesiest feet!
Nittiest scalp!

Dear Sir,
I have been collecting bogeys from my nose for the last two years. I have stuck them all together to make an enormous bogey. It measures 5.3cm in diameter and weighs 3.6 grams. Is this a record?
Yours faithfully
Danny Baker
(Aged nine and a bit)
Steve Hartley has created a gorgeously silly and rude debut book for children about Danny Baker, the 9 and a bit year old son of Robert Baker, the Best Goalkeeper in the World Ever and holder of the Most Goalkeeping Records according to The Great Big Book of World Records. Desperate to follow in his dad’s footsteps, Danny and his best friend, Matthew Mason, embark on a series of attempts to obtain some very funny and very rude world records, including: The World’s Biggest Bogey, World’s Smelliest Feet, and World’s Spottiest Bottom.
With illustrations by Kate Pankhurst, this has plenty of laugh-out loud moments (particularly the correspondence between Danny and Eric Bibby, the Keeper of Records). Danny is a determined boy, albeit one with an unholy interest in all things disgusting, who is never dispirited when his attempts don’t quite go to plan, while Matthew is a supportive best friend.
My only nitpick is a query as to why Danny never seems to check the Great Big Book of Records before making his attempts, but that’s a small detail and one that certainly won’t bother the target readership of children aged 7+.
Parents who are keen to get their children interested in reading won’t do much better than this v. funny book.
The Verdict:
Funny, silly and rude, this is an amusing children’s book in the tradition of Roald Dahl. Aimed at 7+ readers it has some v. amusing illustrations by Kate Pankhurst and the yuck factor of the record attempts is sure to delight the target age group.
